General Discussion / Architectural education In doldrums
« on: June 23, 2011, 12:59:36 AM »
Last week I was invited by one of the private architectural schools of Delhi NCR to be an external examiner to assess the work of 3rd year students. My assessment was restricted to working drawings and municipal submission drawings that they had done during the semester.

I must admit I am quite disappointed by the standard of work that I got to see. Most drawings were illegible, be it either minuscule text to bad line thicknesses to improper scale. The worst was these very drawings had been internally assessed by the internal examiner. I could not decide who should bear the responsibility the teachers who were unable to train them or the students who refused to perform.

Something drastic needs to be done, else the future of architecture is not in very good hands.

Hi Mike,

We too specialize in Healthcare architecture and are moving into getting our buildings green certified. In India we have our own certification "GRIHA".

It would be nice to exchange notes.

Architects or licensed surveyors will be held responsible if their clients carry out illegal constructions and they do nothing to stop it, says a new circular issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on February 4. Anil Sakhare, counsel for the BMC, told the Bombay high court on Tuesday that municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar had issued the circular to curb unauthorised constructions.

The high court was hearing a petition filed by Shri Balaji International School challenging the BMC’s action of demolishing a Reliance Energy electricity sub-station, supplying power to the school, set up on a plot reserved for a playground.

The BMC said there were irregularities in the construction of the school building. The judges were irked to find that civic authorities had allowed the 12-storey structure to come up and later condoned the irregularities and regularised it.

The court has issued a notice to the school’s architect, Umesh Bhat, and the Council of Architecture.

Jugaad Urbanism: Resourceful Strategies for Indian Cities : Exhibition

Center for Architecture to present first exhibition in US on contemporary Indian urbanism

Exhibition on view in New York February 10 – May 21, 2011

Set in the radically uneven urban landscapes of Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Pune, India, Jugaad Urbanism explores how the energy of citizens “making-do” is translated by architects, urban planners, and governmental and nongovernmental entities into efficient and inventive strategies for sustainable urban growth. From energy generating spinning wheels to the extensive skywalks of Mumbai – the exhibition highlights how “jugaad” interventions (a term in Hindi used to describe an innovative, resourceful approach) are challenging traditional spatial hierarchies and mechanistic planning principles.

The work of Indian artists, including Raqs Media Collective, will also be included in the exhibition, offering insights into the complex and oft cited “messy” urbanism of India.

CAD / Free Android Apps for Architects

Free Android Apps for Architects

Seeing that the android  is all set to overtake the Iphone, prompted me to go in for an Android based phone. Being an architect, my first search for apps was that connected to architecture. Unfortunately did not find any post on the net that gave a list of android apps for architects, though some do exist for the iphone. Besides AndCAD I found no app that can open a CAD drawing. Hopefully Autodesk will come out with a version of Autocad WS for the Android also.  Below is a link to list of apps that will assist an architect.

Students of Architecture / Re: Question for Architectures!!

Idealy yes you need a highend laptop.

A celeron based machine is a complete no.  So are the new Atom based processors.

Go in for 2-3 GB of RAM 160 GB plus of HDD and core2duo processor. and if you plan to do a lot of heavy photoshop work or 3d rendring the above system will just about make it buy not fly.

NEWS / Seminar : Wood in Architecture - 16th Feb 2009

Wood in Architecture

an educational seminar for architects
Hardwoods can be used for a wide range of applications and offer a huge diversity of colour and character. Wood is not a homogenous material, it comprises many different species, all with different characteristics and natural properties. It is this diversity that presents so much potential for prospective designers, but given such a wide range of species to choose from, means that specifying the right hardwood for the right application can be a complicated business. It is therefore essential to know your species and know their potential. This seminar is designed to inform architects of the characteristics and possible applications for one very important group of temperate species, American hardwoods.
